Sustainable Cities Network

In 2018, ISWA launched the “Initiative for Mayors and Municipalities” with the goal of attracting mayors and top municipal officers to ISWA under a shared vision of promoting sustainable waste and resource management.

The initiative, launched by Philip Heylen (Honorary Vice Mayor, City of Antwerp), was largely event/forum focused, with several high-level panels at leading international events, including World Cities Summit (Singapore 2018), ISWA World Congress 2018 (Kuala Lumpur, 2018) World Resources Forum (Antwerp, 2019).IMMinvited a range of stakeholders, from municipalities, NGOs and the private sector to discuss the implementation, challenges, and overall benefits of waste management and circular economy strategies at city level. A number ofMayors and cities participated in these discussions and panels and pledged that their city shares ISWA’s vision.
